“21st Century competencies include deep understanding, flexibility and the capacity to make creative connections and a range of so-called ‘soft skills’ including good team-working.’ (p. 4) Objective: What have you learned from reflecting on this particular quote? What has caught your attention? What I have learned from reflecting on this quote is that if students were to be successful in school or in their workplace, both the soft and technical skills are essential. School is like a training ground for students to obtain both of these skills as it prepares them for their future career. What caught my attention is that this quote relates to an article which I recently read. In this article “A Harvard psychologist says people judge you based on 2 criteria when they first meet you”, the author stresses the importance of both “warmth” and “competence”. Hence both attributes are important in the business world. Reflective: What did you realize about teaching as a result of this quote? What I realize about teaching as a result of this quote is that teaching plays a vital role in connecting the bridge between education and career for the adult learners. It closes the gap between philosophy and practicality. If educators want to prepare their students for successful in the course and in their future workplace, the educators would need to incorporate various type of learning outcome assessments in their teaching to help their students develop a right mix of soft and technical skills. Interpretive: What was your ‘Aha!” moment when you read this quote? In what way(s) did this quote change your mind about being an adult educator? What was one key insight that you now have as a result of this quote? This quote changed my mind about being an adult educator in that adult educators are not just lecturers who impart technical knowledge to their adult learners, but they are also role model to adult learners in other competencies as well. People learn best from shadowing others and practicing. Adult learners observe and learn through how their educators manage, communicate, and lead. Decisional: How has this quote and the insight that you have gained from reflecting upon it, influenced your notion of teaching or how you will teach in the future? The quote had influenced my notion of teaching in that as an educator, I have to be professional with my interaction with my students both inside and outside of the classroom. In addition to being professional and setting a good example in front of my student learners, I would provide opportunities for students to demonstrate and develop these competencies (e.g. teamwork, understanding, leadership etc.) during my instruction. For example when appropriate, I will incorporate group activities/projects into my course. Reference: Goudreau, J. (2016, January 16). “an educated person is one who has learned how to learn… how to adapt and change.” (p. 31) Objective: What have you learned from reflecting on this particular quote? What has caught your attention? What I have learned from reflecting on this quote is that for the most part, there are no “smart” person and “not smart” person in this world. It all depends on whether a person has been trained to learn or not. The trained are the one who are educated and an educated person is one who has been trained and know how to learn, adapt, and change. Reflective: What did you realize about teaching as a result of this quote? What I realize about teaching as a result of this quote is that teaching is about developing the student learners to be “educated” people. When I was a student, I had always wondered why some students worked very hard in school but their grades did not reflect their efforts, while some students did not need to study very much and they performed well in school. Now I understand that the reason is because the students who did well were the ones who had learned how to learn. Since they know how to study, they can understand the material a lot quicker. Therefore, the role that teaching plays is not limited to just providing the lecture content to learners, but also helping the student learners better understand themselves so that they can learn more efficiently and effectively. Interpretive: What was your ‘Aha!” moment when you read this quote? In what way(s) did this quote change your mind about being an adult educator? What was one key insight that you now have as a result of this quote? This quote changed my mind about being an adult educator in that in addition to the traditional classroom teaching, the roles of adult educators also entail encouraging student learners to discover what styles of learning suit them best and teaching them techniques to learn and adapt so as to better prepare the learners for their future work. As an educator, we should be teaching our students how to think and not what to think, allowing them to reach the conclusion themselves. Decisional: How has this quote and the insight that you have gained from reflecting upon it, influenced your notion of teaching or how you will teach in the future? The quote had influenced my notion of teaching in that when I teach in the future, I would incorporate various type of learning outcome assessments in my course. Also, I would teach my student learners how to learn and study for themselves more effectively by encouraging them to view things from a big picture perspective, similar to employees understanding how their roles should align with their company’s vision and strategic plan. For instance, I would dedicate some time in my instruction to ask my learners about the main message of the lecture and teach them how to summarize 20 to 30 PowerPoint slides to a 1-page summary sheet. “Learning from one’s experience involves not just reflection, but critical reflection.” (p. 117) Objective: What have you learned from reflecting on this particular quote? What has caught your attention? Before reading this quote, I understand that it is good to write reflection. I understand that a good reflection can help a person improve his/her life. However, I do not know what a good reflection is. After reading this quote and thinking about it, I understand that reflection is not just simple diary and journal. Through reflecting on this quote, I now understand what a good reflection is. What has caught my attention is that there is a deeper level of reflection called critical reflection, which enables learning from one’s experience through delving into the past, looking at the present and speculating about the future with a series of critical questionings and reasoning. Reflective: What did you realize about teaching as a result of this quote? What I realize about teaching as a result of this quote is that learning does not just take place through a one-way stream which starts from the instructors and stops at their students. Students can self-teach themselves and students enjoy doing so. Self-learning can also occur through critical reflection, where an individual is willing to step back and take the time to think about his/her practice and ideas, and examine his/her thinking so as to take corrective action and make improvement for the future. Interpretive: What was your ‘Aha!” moment when you read this quote? In what way(s) did this quote change your mind about being an adult educator? What was one key insight that you now have as a result of this quote? This quote changed my mind about being an adult educator in that it is easy to become an adult educator, but being a good adult educator does require some efforts, care, and love. In order to maximize the learning of students, an adult educator should identify the student learning outcome and then carefully design critical reflection to generate and document student learning before, during, and after the experience. Decisional: How has this quote and the insight that you have gained from reflecting upon it, influenced your notion of teaching or how you will teach in the future? The quote had influenced my notion of teaching. Adding depth and breadth to an experience, critical reflection is “descriptive, analytical, and critical”. Seeing that there is a lot of value in critical reflection, I do plan to incorporate “critical reflective” assessment and engage my students in critical reflection in my future teaching so as to maximize students’ learning experience through teaching them how to think critically and building connections between course content and the experience. “Persevering at online learning is also affected by computer and information literacy, time management… online communication skills… self-esteem, feelings of belongingness in the online program and the ability to develop interpersonal skills with peers…” (p. 199) Objective: What have you learned from reflecting on this particular quote? What has caught your attention? Online learning is a mode of teaching that is delivered via the internet and involves the use of the online materials, group discussions and consultation with the instructor. Since the beginning of the 21st century, online learning has become more and more popular. Compared to the traditional in-class teaching, online learning offers various benefits to the students, instructors, and the institutions. What I have learned from reflecting on this quote is that to maximize the effectiveness of online learning, there are some essential attributes that are needed, such as computer and information literacy, self-esteem, and feeling of belongingness in the program etc. Reflective: What did you realize about teaching as a result of this quote? What I realize about teaching as a result of this quote is that there is a direct and positive relationship between the level of engagement and the technological knowledge of the adult learners. Studies have shown that when the learners are were properly trained on how to use the technology associated with online learning, they become more engaged (Johnson, 2011). This in turn led to the students processing the information faster and shortened the time for new information to sink in. Interpretive: What was your ‘Aha!” moment when you read this quote? In what way(s) did this quote change your mind about being an adult educator? What was one key insight that you now have as a result of this quote? In today’s era of increasing technology, a lot of courses offer a hybrid of both in-class and online components. Indeed, there is a shift in how instruction has been conducted. This quote changed my mind about being an adult educator in that not just students need to adapt to changes, but also the instructors as well. The adult educator would need to familiarize him/herself with the online education and understand its capabilities first beforehand. Decisional: How has this quote and the insight that you have gained from reflecting upon it, influenced your notion of teaching or how you will teach in the future? The quote had influenced my notion of teaching in that when I prepare for my instruction, I will take into account not only the physical attribute and technological knowledge of the students, but also the emotional well-being aspect as well. I will provide support to them to ensure that they are engaged. Reference: Johnson, M. (n.d.). How to Deliver Effective Instruction and Overcome Barrier to Learning.
